Society of the Citizens of Pozzallo United, Inc.

The Society of the Citizens of Pozzallo had its humble beginnings back in 1919 when a group of immigrants from Pozzallo, a small fishing village in southern Sicily, founded this organization for the purpose of promoting fellowship among newly arrived immigrant members and by providing assistance in mainstreaming them in the American ideals and the American way of life.

These guiding principles have been the pillars that have sustained our organization for nearly 100 years.

The key to our organization's long life has been its adaptability to the times and sensitivity to the needs of the community at large.

Over the years, our organization has constantly evolved and has effectively adapted to the requirements of the community it serves.

A major milestone of its evolutionary process was achieved in 2007 when The Society of the Citizens of Pozzallo was restructured as a charitable 501(C3) community service organization.

What was once an organization characterized by the membership of predominantly male immigrants, today is focusing its efforts on expanding its appeal to women and the younger generation in order to secure a brighter future of service to our community and our partner organizations.

Most importantly, the IRS approved 501(C3) designation has allowed The Society Of The Citizens Of Pozzallo to expand and intensify its community service activities in the areas of education, art, philanthropy, scientific research, community development and other charitable and cultural activities that have benefited the community at large.

Our story is an american story that can be illustrated by the variety of skills and talents of citizens with roots to the town of Pozzallo that have become american heroes, celebrated artists, entrepreneurs and public servants who are a testament to the Society's impact on the achievement of the "American Dream" .

A small example includes, Peter Joseph Sigona, a World War II hero who was awarded by President Roosevelt, the Distinguished Service Medal for heroism beyond the call of duty. John Buscema, a famous Marvel Comics artist known for comics such as "The Avengers" and "Conan The Barbarian". Santo Matarazzo, a Brooklyn sculptor/artist who created many well known sculptures of historic figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, William Floyd and the large "Globe" sculpture currently on display at the entrance of the Ellis Island museum.

In recognition of the contributions of our organization to the Italian American communities and other partner organizations, in April of 2009 Mayor Michael Bloomberg designated "CITIZENS OF POZZALLO WAY" the street of our headquarters near the corner of Henry and Sackett street in Brooklyn.

Strengthened by our past achievements, and our recent reforms and initiatives, we are prepared for new challenges and look forward to a brighter future of continued service to our community, our city, out state and our country.
